Popular keywords vs. long-tail keywords. Which one generates more traffic to your web-site?

Usually when selecting the keywords for our articles we think that if we’ll use the most popular keywords searched by people it will generate to our blog/site more traffic. But is it really so? I suggest to make a small research together, what do you think about?

The level of competition between popular keywords is incredibly high, and some sources state that using them will not provide us the desired results.

Long-tail keywords (LTK) are oriented to specific niches, and are considered as tools for increasing the organic search traffic to the site. Exemple: custom fields in WordPress.  As for a rule Long-tail keywords are formed by > than one word and are targetting your public better, but these do not reffer to the top of searches as for exemple WordPress templates.

From SEO point of view LTK differ from the popular and commonly used keywords and are more exactly characterizing the person’s needs.

  1. Top level keywords are becoming more and more difficult to rank for especially with Google’s latest updates. SEO’s who’ve been killing it for years are now flailing around in the dark with no real idea what to do. Google win again!

The long tail, however, is still easy to rank for because the competition is usually low. But how do you know which long tail phrases to go after? Well you can either spend hours and hours doing competitive research or you can simply target all of them!

If you build a site with 4000 pages focusing on 4000 different long tails then you will find that 1, Google likes your nice big site and 2, you will discover thousands more long tail phrases in your stats which you can then either add to your site or build a brand new one!

Hope this was helpful and please check out my site for lots of very big long tail keyword lists … all free 🙂

  2. Very good blog! Do you have any tips for aspiring writers?
I’m planning to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or
go for a paid option? There are so many options out there
that I’m totally overwhelmed .. Any tips? Thanks a lot!
